Organized by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and supported by organizations around the world, World Digital Preservation Day celebrates the positive impact of digital preservation. Our colleagues at Portico and Ithaka S+R have contributed two blog posts on this year’s theme, “Digits: For Good.”

Stephanie Orphan, Director of Content Preservation at Portico, discusses our current work to ensure the preservation of and ongoing access to the growing body of independent Open Access journals. Learn more in “Portico: Evolving with the community to ensure access to scholarship for good.”

In “It Takes a Village: Documenting the Pandemic for Research, Policy, and Practice,” Oya Y. Rieger, Senior Strategist at Ithaka S+R, and Rebecca Springer, Analyst at Ithaka S+R, report that even as cultural heritage organizations undertake the important work of curating and archiving content related to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital preservation continues to be an expensive and complicated process. They now have a research study under way to examine the sustainability of digital preservation and curation systems, and provide an update on the Ithaka S+R blog today.

Visit the DPC website for additional news, events, and resources related to World Digital Preservation Day.

Recent research has demonstrated that dozens of online-only Open Access journals are no longer available, while hundreds of others are inactive and at risk of being lost. Important scholarship may be lost to future generations of researchers if there is no preservation plan in place.

At Portico, a not-for-profit organization with a mission to preserve the scholarly record, we work with publishers and libraries to ensure that academic content remains accessible and usable for the long term. Currently, we are preserving more than 5,000 Open Access journals from 309 publishers. We have triggered and provide public access to 114 OA journals that are no longer available through other digital platforms. This content remains available to everyone on an Open Access basis after being triggered on Portico.

It is not only Open Access content that is vulnerable. We have also focused efforts on the “long tail” of publishers that publish ten or fewer titles, and we are currently preserving content from more than 400 small publishers. In addition, we have broad international coverage; Portico is preserving scholarship from publishers in 74 countries. Search our full list of 800+ participating publishers.

Complex new forms of scholarship, such as enhanced digital monographs, are also at risk. As the ebook format has matured, authors and publishers have experimented with advanced features afforded by the digital medium, and these works pose different preservation challenges than standard monographs. Portico is part of a collaborative effort, led by NYU Libraries and supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to develop best practices for publishers to guide them on how to apply enhancements to publications in a way that can be preserved at scale, or otherwise be aware of the preservation risks of implementing various enhanced features. We look forward to sharing our final report by early next year.

At Portico, we believe that it is important for all of us, as a community, to explore methods for preserving more of the most vulnerable content. We are planning further discussions on this topic with librarians and publishers; if you are interested in joining us and sharing your perspective, please reach out to Stephanie Orphan, Portico’s Director of Content Preservation, at stephanie.orphan@ithaka.org.

On August 5, Karen Hanson, Portico Senior Research Developer, is participating in “Making, Using, and Exploring Web Archives: Tales from Scholars & Practitioners,” a panel discussion in the Web Archiving and Digital Libraries virtual workshop. The presentation is part of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) 2020.

The panel brings together practitioners from computer, library, and information sciences to discuss how web archiving has been applied to save complex digital objects such as e-books, source code and its contextual ephemera, and more. Panelists will discuss current developments, as well as the interoperability of web archiving technology and how it might help facilitate the reuse of web archives. Karen will share what we’ve learned from Portico’s participation in the Mellon-funded research project Enhancing Service to Preserve New Forms of Scholarship, which is exploring the preservation of enhanced monographs.

The session will be open to registrants of JCDL 2020. We look forward to a lively discussion!

The Portico archive now hosts the content from two digital collections published by Gale: The Life and Times of Jorge Luis Borges and Public Life in Contemporary Argentina. Gale will stop hosting this content on 08/31/20; therefore, it has “triggered” and is available via Portico to those Gale customers who purchased the collections. Note that, because these titles are part of our digital collections service, they are available exclusively to Gale customers who have purchased these collections, and Portico participation is not required. Libraries that own these collections should redirect users to the Portico URLs before Gale turns off access.

The Life and Times of Jorge Luis Borges is a collection of materials originating from the Jorge Luis Borges Collection and Documentation Center of the Fundacion San Telmo. It includes a wide range of materials including the entire corpus of Borges’s works as well as rare items and texts that appeared in unindexed national and provincial newspapers and journals.

Public Life in Contemporary Argentina presents an extensive grassroots view of social and political changes in Argentina. Extensive primary source materials go beyond standard press coverage and government declarations to include the perspectives of participants in social movements. It is an excellent resource for Latin American studies, comparative politics, sociology, gender studies, the uses of media in political organizing, political and social groups, social anthropology, and history.

Portico ensures ongoing access to content that is no longer available through its original publisher or a successor. To date, we have triggered 127 items, 103 of them open access. This is the first trigger event in our digital collections service. A full list of triggered content is available to view or download.
